This research focuses the ties between Kingship - as a mode of governance and structure of power - and cities- as a social formation and organization of space. In particular it tries to compare varieties of this pair in general cultural history. Though comparisons do exist already, it seems fruitful to overcome the unbalance in research regarding the regions where both, kingship and cites, existed side by side. In the first place we recollected how kingship in Mesopotamia and Anatolia created cities. Secondly we will reflect the development of city culture in ancient Greece and Rome. At this point, especially the opposition of royalism on the one hand and so-called democracy on the other concerns us. This project therefore deals with the power structure of both systems, and it works out the differences between the aspects of royal-autocratic and collective rule (oligarchy etc.) as they appear, for instance, in the arrangement of walls, buildings, squares, temples and others. Thirdly, this study group tries to expand the analyses to Asia, regions under Islamic rule, medieval and premodern Europe etc., comparing the systems across place and time. We are going to formulate our comprehension and find some essential and general conclusions regarding the function of kingship in cites and vice versa.
