Much research has been done on the origin and development of cities. Also, the relationship between particular regions and urban centers found in them has been explored, along with the influence on or from other regions. Geographers and archeologists have studied structural aspects of cities, while cultural/social anthropologists and cultural historians have focused their work on regional cultures. Although these independent disciplinary efforts have produced much for us to think about, not many attempts have been made to consider these findings in their totality. One finds little done in analyzing urban culture from the perspective of comparative history. The aim of this research project is to combine the research on municipal structures and systems, with studies concerned with regional cultures and societies. By looking at urban development in its many variations in Eurasia, and linking it with the structures of cities and the regional cultures they have been influenced by, it is hoped that some answers to the multifaceted question, ""What is urban culture?"" can be clarified.
