The World of Kôda Rohan

Kôda Rohan (alias of Kôda Shigeyuki, 1867-1947) no doubt was one of Japan's most talented modern novelists, play writers, and essayists. He was active throughout the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods. His literature has been compiled in a forty-volume collection, and its existence has had great influence on the literary, intellectual and cultural history of Japan. Nevertheless, because of its difficulty, a thorough body of research on Rohan's work has yet to appear. Not only will this research project look at aspects of his literary achievements (such as his novels and criticisms) but we will also apply differing perspectives to his many contributions on topics that include urban studies, play, travel, natural science and philosophical reflection. We hope that this exploration will allow for a better understanding of Rohan. The project will also look into the work and lives of Rohan's family members, like his brother Kôda Shigetomo (historian), his sisters Kôda Nobu and Ando Kô (musicians) and his daughter Kôda Aya (novelist).
