It was once natural for Japanese to be raised and die in their homes of birth or marriage, but not today. Due to medical advances and improved dietary conditions, "longevity" has become a reality with the lengthening of average life spans. As a consequence, many people face their death in hospitals, or other welfare institutions. This research intends to examine how the relocation of the "places for death" has brought about a transformation of views on life and death in contemporary Japan. Based on fieldwork data and case studies, the analysis will bi methodologically grounded in medical research pertaining to the topic. Special focus on key terms, such as"place for death""crematory/crematoria," and "bones," will be fundamental to this reconsideration of what "life" and "death" means for the Japanese people today.
