Many of the institutions existing in Japanese society today find their basis in premodern social structures. The purpose of this team research project is to understand some of these aspects by focusing on the political elite in the premodern period, namely, the kuge (courtier) and buke (warrior) classes. Some of the issues we will attempt to verify are the significance of status and function of these elite, the forms in which they were ordered and their social roles. In particular, this phase of our project will center on the importance of bureaucratic and feudal systems and organization for maintaining human relations within these classes. We will be concerned with clarifying the characteristics of the historical situation surrounding these elite. The methodology will involve comparisons with societies and peoples in other areas of the world to see how bureaucratic and feudal systems developed and functioned under different conditions. This will enable a broader perspective for understanding the situation in Japan. One important consideration is the analysis of societies where warriors or a professional military class developed and those that placed literary elite in positions of power. Care in analyzing differences in societal organization in their historical context will shed light on some of the developments found in those societies today.
