In Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, arts and crafts have been prosperous for a long period of time: pottery, dyeing, laquer, silk, among others, represent its handicraft tradition. Still social as well as economic changes in recent years have brought drastic challenges to the working conditions. Some branches face major crisis for lack of indispensable law materials. Many craftsman of the present generation cannot find successors. The team research project aims to examine the present state of the arts and crafts from multiple view points. With the participation of scholars and administrators as well as artist and craftsman are facing. Cooperation of specialists from different fields, like social history and art history, sociology of labor, history of economy are expected. Not only the interest of creators and merchants but also consumer' taste must be taken into account. Audio-visual documentation of the working places may also be part of the present project. Based on the solid first hand information and supported by pluridisciplinary approach, the project hopes to search for possibilities of break-through for the rebirth of the traditional arts and crafts in the futeure.
