In an attempt to understand some characteristics of pre-modern Japanese culture and the society that served as its matrix, this research team has focused its enquiry on the kuge (aristocracy) and buke (warrior) classes that controlled the power structure at that time. Questions were posed to foreground the meaning of their status and vocational function, their formal order and social roles. In this third phase of our research project, we have taken as our central concern, the concept of kingship and its various forms (tenosei, in the case of Japan) that served to support these classes and the meaning of courtesy/ ritual in this context. For a clearer understanding of the relationship between kingship and courtesy in Japan, specialists of Asian (in particular East and Central Asia) and European areas have been included to provide comparative bases for drawing some conclusions. Within this framework, special attention will be given to societies that gave birth to warrior classes that took over political power, and those that saw the emergence of a literate class at the top of the political hegemony. By comparing the differences in the kingship/ritual relationship in these societies, the historical meaning of the variance will be explored with further consideration of the structural characteristics found in these cultures today.
