Recently, many studies focused on the generic affiliation of the Japanese language have appeared both in Japan and the West. Although there are numerous hypotheses concerning Japanese language origin, consensus has yet to emerge and there is little, if any cooperation between Japanese and Western scholars in this field. However, the reconstruction of the Japanese proto-language has progressed in the last two decades, along with the study of languages frequently compared with Japanese. Based on this knowledge, two hypotheses seem most likely regarding language origin; namely, an Altaic origin and a treatment of Japanese as a mixed language. By an exchange of ideas between Japanese and Western scholars this research team hopes to clarify some of the significant issues and establish future cooperation.
