Japanese culture since the 1980's is often characterized as 'a culture of copying'. Japanese are said to be tolerant of copying information. This might have deep relation to the Japanese tradition of creativeness and learning methods based on mimicry, which is represented by the Japanese traditional terms 'modoki' (mimicry) and 'manebi' (learning, following examples). Mimicry and 'utsushi' (copying) could be said to express the notion of creation by abandoning creation. Therein, perhaps, lies the characteristic feature of the Japanese information culture. Copying and the mimicry, which are treated as negative behaviors in recent arguments regarding copyright, should be reconsidered from the viewpoint of the information transmission and the creative action in literature, visual art, performing art, and the way of art in Japan and other countries. On the other hand, the basic and the scientific notion of similarity among the plural objects should be confirmed as a premise of such argument. Currently, most similarity discrimination is performed by subjective judgement based on personal experience. In recognition engineering, the definition of the similarity among some objects is the most difficult problem. By fusing the humanities method and the recognition engineering method of similarity discrimination, we hope to offer a new viewpoint to the research on the information culture of mimicry. This research group will investigate the scientific base of similarity discrimination, and reconsider the value of mimicry in the information culture.
