Recently, we have seen an international move to take a new look at the Japanese art and culture in the 1920s and 1930s. In the last twenty years, from the viewpoint of the formation of urban mass culture, a reconceptualization of the culture movement in the 1920s has taken root in many fields. Especially in the last five years, we have noted (a)a reconsideration of to reconsider the avant-garde in art, tracing it back to the 1910s; (b)the permeation of the approach of gender studies; (c)the extension of the research fields to embrace the urban mass culture; and (d)the development of studies of local cultures and the preparation of related materials. We now face a need to launch interdisciplinary studies that strive toward a synthesis, though we understand that there is a long way to go, and there remain many opportunities for making discoveries in various aspects of modernism, before we shall accomplish the goal. This study group will aim to deepen the study on the Modernism in the Kansai area, where we have observed a remarkable progress in recent years.
