With a major exception in the case of those few Western scholars who have witnessed actual Noh performances on stage, Noh texts-yokyoku-have been appreciated primarily as literature by Westerners ever since their discovery of Noh in the Meiji period. This stands in stark contrast to the situation that prevails in the country that created Noh, Japan, where yokyoku are treated not as literature but almost exclusively as libretti for stage performance, a fact that comes as a shock to most Westerners, including the organizer of this research project, who first learned of Noh through the writings of such pioneers as Arthur Waley and Donald Keene. Noh is a performance art, and thus true Noh exists only in performance: the organizer is fully cognizant of this fact. But he asserts with equal conviction that true appreciation of a Noh performance is possible only with an awareness of the literary content of the yokyoku upon which it is based. Thus, he has proposed the present research project designed to bring together scholars and Noh performers in order to carry out a multi-faceted examination of the relationship between stage performance and yokyoku text.
