A city creates versatile bonds covering an area that usually surpasses the actual domains of its power. Especially the kind of city that can be regarded as most sophisticated, in the classification of cities by city-functions, was involved in the formation of a space which exceeded even the territory of the state. Examining the written histories and the descriptive records of East Asian cities done from ancient to modern times in the different fields, this team research project aims to throw light on the historical processes by which each city became a part of the network of the geographical area called ''East Asia'', and discuss how much each one influenced the changes in relationships within this network.
