Japan clearly played a major role as a provider of capital and technology in the development of Asia from the 1970s to the 80s. It is noteworthy that the development of Asian countries was modeled after the successful "Japanese System" -a system in place since the Meiji period and characterized by close relations between the government and private sector actors. In a similar vein, it is recognized that the government played a significant role in the economic development of East Asian and South East Asian countries. For these reasons, the limitations and the effectiveness of the Japanese System have attracted attention since the burst of Japan's bubble economy. The objective of this research project is to analyze the characteristics of Japan's postwar economy and politics: however, a comparative analysis with Asia is indispensable to attaining this objective. In particular, since comprehensive statistical data on South East Asia is quite limited and religious and ethnic compositions are complex in these countries, this collaborative research will be carried out with the participation of specialists from other Asian nations.
