The present research project aims at the investigation into the transition of the Japanese conception of time from a variety of perspectives. Whereas the Japanese today are often told to be punctual and industrious, "Japanese time" in the early Meiji era meant to be loose or imprecise about time. How, then, did the Japanese become as punctual as they are now? This is the central question of this research project. Based on our tracing of the historical process through which the Japanese became more and more punctual and industrious, we will compare the conception of time in some foreign countries, and discuss the prospects for the future.
