Tales and phenomena of the “strange,” such as apparitions, goryo, and monsters, have received recognition as playing an important role in the formation and development of Japanese cultural history. The strong negative meaning placed on these beings, however, has led to their peripheral positioning within the various research areas in which they are included. The purpose of this research project is to rectify the situation by focusing directly on horror culture itself while grounding it in the cultural historic perspective. Interdisciplinary analysis of the history, religion, literature, art, performing arts, geography, cosmology, architecture, and gender research of each period and the results of international research should result in a holistic understanding. This project will also concentrate on locating the rich body of documents available and consider methodological issues for further research.
