This is to inquire into the roles that Britain played in creating the modern world economy, keeping in mind what happened to Asia in general and to Japan in particular. Those historical materials which we will mainly explore are the most voluminous documents in the world, that is, the British Parliamentary Papers, originally possessed by the Library of the Board of Trade of the British Government, now housed in Japan's National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka. During the course of the eighteenth century, Britain emerged as a world-wide Empire, while Japan created a self-sufficient economy within its borders. This contrast stands out conspicuously, when we take into consideration the fact that both nations had engaged in a brisk maritime trade in the common regions of Asian seas in the 16-17th centuries, with a similar structure to each other, i. e., both exporting bullion to and importing goods from Asia. Another issue is to investigate the rise and fall of the Japanese Empire in the pre-war period, comparatively with that of the British Empire. We have already established international research-links with scholars of England, Wales, and Ireland.
