Representations of the body, sickness, and sex in Japanese art abound in rich and complex cultural meanings. The aim of this research project is to unpack the meanings of a select number of these pictures through intensive interdisciplinary analysis. Through this analysis, we hope to develop new perspectives on the cultural history of the body in Japan.
