As in the case of the European Mediterranean Sea, inland sea coastal regions frequently interact through water transport, and such interactions contributed considerably to the formation of ancient civilizations. There is no exception in the East Asian mediterranean seas, including the Sea of Japan, the Bohai Sea, the East China Sea, and the Yellow Sea. Between the third and seventh centuries in particular, social evolution was accompanied by rapid political changes in the Chinese continent, the Korean peninsula, and the Japanese archipelago. The ways in which foreign cultures were transmitted and received varied widely from one region to another in response to their individual political situations. By investigating specific aspects of cultural contacts utilizing methodologies of history, archaeology, religion, literature, and geography, we aim to understand the processes behind the formation of ancient East Asian civilizations.
