趣旨

急速な経済成長と社会変化を経験したアジアでは、ジェンダー役割もまた変化している。その事実には誰もが同意するだろうが、どのような方向へ向かっているのかというと合意は無い。アジア女性は主婦になろうとしているのだろうか、あるいはその反対か。ヨーロッパや北米の経験では、近代において女性はまず主婦になり、それから主婦であることをやめ始めた。しかし現在のアジアで今何が起きているのかをわたしたちは正確には知らない。アジアの近代はしばしば「圧縮された近代」と呼ばれる。異なる段階の変化が重なりあっているという意味である。現在のアジアで起きているジェンダーの構築を理解し先行きを見通すためには、近代のみならず、グローバル化、国際移動の女性化、および政策的枠組みを視野に入れねばならないだろう。本シンポジウムでは、移民女性と主婦という二つのタイプの女性にとりわけ注目する。彼女たちはグローバルな規模で進行している人間再生産の再編成のアジアにおける展開をそれぞれの角度から映し出している。

Everybody agrees that gender roles are changing in Asia, which has gone through rapid economic growth and social change. But in which direction? Are Asian women becoming housewives or are they headed in a different direction? In the European and North American experience, modernity first turned women into housewives and then de-housewived them, but we don’t know exactly what is happening in Asia now. Asian modernity is sometimes called “compressed modernity,” where different stages of change overlap. We should also take into account the effects of globalization and the feminization of migration, as well as policy frameworks, to fully understand and foresee the construction of gender that is taking place in contemporary Asia. We have chosen two types of women as our focus: migrant women and housewives. They represent different aspects of the global reconfiguration of human reproduction that we can see in the Asian context.
