Graduate Education

Doctoral Program in Japanese Studies

About the Program

In April 1992, the Department of Japanese Studies was established at the Center as a division of the School of Cultural Studies, Graduate University for Advanced Studies. This department offers a rigorous, integrated graduate education with an international and interdisciplinary approach to Japan-related fields in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The Ph.D. course is open to students from both Japan and abroad. There is an expectation that these students will become creative researchers with an international perspective in the field of Japan Studies.

General Information

Department of Japanese Studies admission policy:
Profile of interested students:

The International Research Center for Japanese Studies will welcome students who have a strong desire and interest in Japanese studies or a related area, and who intend to continue their research in the future and contribute to society as independent scholars.

Admission policy:

The admission decision, based on the screening of papers/theses and the supporting application documents, will be based on the assessment of master’s theses or other scholarly papers (in the case of the submission of papers that were previously published separate from the master’s thesis, both the master’s thesis and the published papers will be considered), the research proposal, as well as on other supporting documents.

  1. Master’s theses and academic papers will be assessed on their format, originality, applicability, theory, and substantiality. The application research statement will be evaluated on originality and organization.
  2. For the final decision on admission there will be an interview that will consider the individual, content of his or her responses, and potential. The final assessment will be made based on these criteria.

This symbol represents flowing water. Water implies a source of life with the ensuing benefits. By using this symbol, the image of water is likened to the roots of culture in general. Furthermore, flowing water evokes images of fluidity and life force. These images are indicative of Nichibunken's learning style, pursuing dynamic studies of Japanese culture. The three lines of the symbol, the centerline connecting the other lines, denote the interdisciplinary and international exchange sought by Nichibunken.
