This symbol represents flowing water. Water implies a source of life with the ensuing benefits. By using this symbol, the image of water is likened to the roots of culture in general. Furthermore,  flowing water evokes images of fluidity and life force. These images are indicative of Nichibunken's learning style, pursuing dynamic studies of Japanese culture. The three lines of the symbol, the centerline connecting the other lines, denote the interdisciplinary and international exchange sought by Nichibunken.

Library Collections

The collections are focused on books relating to Japan written in foreign languages (called Gaisho) and materials necessary for Japanese studies.
Books (Japanese: approximately 317,000 volumes, foreign languages: approximately 142,000 volumes including approximately 58,000 volumes of Gaisho).
Periodicals (Japanese: approximately 6,700 titles, foreign languages: approximately 1,200 titles)
AV Materials (approximately 9,900 titles, including video tapes, CDs, maps, photographs)
Microfilms (approximately 3,300 titles)
Digital Materials (approximately 300 titles)

Spacial Collections

The Center houses the Soda collection, Noma collection, Collection of Tetsu Hiroshige, Hiroshi Hazama, Masashi Takahashi, Kazutaka Unno, and Nicchu Collection(Collection of Research Center for History of Japanese and Chinese). The Soda collection and Noma collection are placed separately.

  • Ask at the checkout counter if you need to use materials longer than the loan period or if you cannot find an item.
  • An application is required to use rare books. (See "Application forms")

Finding Materials

Feel free to browse at will following the classification numbers that correspond to your desired subject. Please return all materials to their proper location. All unaffiliated persons need to register at the checkout counter.

Reference Books (Reading Room 1F) (Library Stacks 2F)

The reference books on the first floor of the reading room are divided into reference, indexes, and biographical directories. Almanacs and white papers are on the second floor of the Library Stacks. Reference books cannot be checked out.

Foreign Books (Reading Room 2F/3F) (Library Stacks 2F Mezzanine)

A-HK are on the second floor of the Reading Room, HM-N on the third floor and P-Z on the second floor mezzanine of the library stacks. Chinese, Korean, and Russian books are on the second floor mezzanine of the library stacks.

Japanese Books (Library Stacks 1F/2F)

A-GC/37 are on the first floor and GC/41-Z are on the second floor.

Periodicals (Reading Room 2F) (Library Stacks 3F)

Foreign periodicals (previous one year) are on the second floor of the reading room. Chinese, Korean and Russian periodicals (bound volumes) are on the second floor mezzanine of the library stacks. Japanese and foreign periodicals (bound volumes) are on the third floor of library stacks.

You can request books and materials from other universities. We will issue a letter of introduction if you wish to use other universities‘f libraries. Ask at the checkout counter for details.

Library use by unaffiliated persons

Non-members are allowed to use the library facilities only for the purposes of survey and/or research.
Advance notification by the library of your university or near public library and presentation of an ID are required.
You need to tell them your purpose, title of materials which you want to use and date for your visiting. We check whether it is possible for you to use materials you want and reply to you. It may take a lot of time, please refer early.
If you want to visit on Saturday, please be sure to read “Library use on Saturday” in the below.
