- The organization of research activities is flexible.
- The Center performs the role of a resource center by providing information and bibliographical assistance to scholars and research institutions both in Japan and overseas.
- Research cooperation is available to scholars in various regions of the world, in response to the particular needs of Japanese studies in each region.
- Graduate instruction and guidance toward the Ph. D. degree is offered through the CenterČs International Department of Japanese Studies, which is one of the constituent units of the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, an institution operated under the auspices of the Ministry of Education that comprises thirteen inter-university research institutes in the natural and social sciences and humanities.
- The Center provides orientation and guidance on Japanese studies for Japanese and foreign graduate students who are affiliated with other educational institutions in Japan.
