Admission for Research Students

The Department of Japanese Studies admits who wish to pursue research on a specific theme relating to Japanese studies (April and October admission)

Applications for Research Student status at Nichibunken must be preceded by receipt of informal assent from the member of the faculty under which the applicant wishes to engage in research. Applicants should have made contact with the faculty member(s) of their choice and fully discussed their plan for research, and (if coming from abroad), made clear prior to submitting the application, their Japanese-language proficiency and as well as plans for supporting themselves while residing in Japan. The Department does not introduce students to faculty members, but applicants may consult the Nichibunken website Research Division page for profiles of the Department faculty members.

  3. Screening fee
    ¥9,800 (contact Nichibunken regarding the appropriate method of payment at the address given under “Address for all communications” below). Foreign students receiving state-funded scholarships are exempt from this fee, and should submit documentation showing proof of their scholarship status.
  4. Curriculum vitae
    No prescribed form.
  5. Copy of certificate of completion (or expected completion) of master’s degree.
    Should be signed by the president or chairman of the research department of the applicant’s graduate school.
  6. Transcript
    Should be signed by the president or chairman of the research department of the applicant’s graduate school.
  7. Major research publications
    No prescribed form.
  8. Proposed Research Project
    Use the prescribed form to present an outline of proposed research project.

  10. Certificate of Health
    Use the prescribed form, and have the certificate signed by a doctor within three months of application.

  12. Consent of head of affiliated institution
    ・Applicants seeking to enter Nichibunken while still affiliated with their previous institution should submit a letter of consent from the head of their institution.
    ・Applicants seeking to enter Nichibunken while enrolled in another institution should provide a certificate showing their student status or notice of permission from the head of the institution (certificate of leave of absence, etc.)
  13. Certificate of Alien Registration (for non-Japanese)
    Foreign students already in Japan should submit documentation demonstrating their immigration status in Japan.

    ・Those granted scholarships or other financial aid should submit relevant documentation.

Enrollment Procedures

  1. Enrollment fee
    ¥84,600 (to be paid before enrollment)
  2. Tuition
    ¥29,700 per month (to be paid in the lump sum of ¥178,200 for the six-month spring semester)
    (Schedule for enrollment and registration will be sent at the time of notification of admission)
  3. Withdrawal
    Those who wish to withdraw from the status of Research Student during the term of acceptance should fill out and submit the requisite form.
